About the Author
Michael McMullen
Michael McMullen has always had a passion for storytelling - from telling humorous tales to his children when they were young to creating the customer experience “story” as they walk through a retail space. Now, in his two books, the recently published Garbage Boy: The High Bar of Low Expectations and his first book Scarred, Michael’s storytelling journey continues.
Michael was born and raised in Orillia, Ontario, Canada - a small town that provides a backdrop to his written works. He attained a B.A. from the University of Guelph and went on to earn a MBA at The University of Western Ontario. Next, a seven year stint at Wilfrid Laurier University, Michael’s illustrative narrative style led to him receiving two ‘Golden Shovel’ teaching awards from the student association. After teaching, Michael started a successful journey in the corporate world, beginning with IKEA and being one of handful of executives who moved from Canada to launch IKEA in the United States. Canada called him back home - although to LaSalle, Manitoba this time - where he successfully led a chain of 100+ stores. His next adventure was leading the historic 132 store portfolio of the NorthWest company across Canada’s north in the locations of the old Hudson Bay and NorthWest fur trading posts. |
Michael then founded MCM Consulting, providing strategic and operating direction for a wide diversity of clients in a variety of sectors. For more on his career check LinkedIn.
As a storyteller, Michael uses his writing as a tool to reflect on the past. His writing doesn’t preach - but his tales are of ascendancy, rising from low means and social class. The underlying themes of his stories cover income gap inequities, social class disparities, racism, stereotyping, and bias - as well as murder, sex, and rock and roll. Michael was a Garbage Boy! His first full time summer job was with a stick and a spike cleaning the parks of Orillia. The essence of that experience and other shaping events on his journey are embedded in the spirit and backbone of his stories. Michael hopes that as you engage with his books you enjoy the read, reflect on your own story of ascension, and how to help others ascend. Lifting yourself and others up in spirit and deed is a great story for us all to tell.
Michael lives in LaSalle, Manitoba, Canada with his wife (high school sweetheart) Debra. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Michael enjoys spending time with friends and family, golfing, traveling, hiking and serves on the boards of Diabetes Canada, National Diabetes Trust, First People’s Economic Growth Fund, and SickNotWeak mental health.
